Pet Wellness Program

Companion Animal Hospital is your ally in preventing disease in your pet, not just treating illness and injury.

pet wellness program santa cruz vetCompanion Animal Hospital offers a progressive new approach to veterinary care. Our Wellness Program embraces a focus on preventative medicine based on the specific life-stage of your pet. Each patient is assessed individually based on factors such as species, breed, age, and environmental challenges. Next we offer recommendations for prevention, nutrition, and diagnostic work-ups appropriate for your pet.

The key to Companion Animal Hospital Wellness Program is an emphasis on the annual health examination. Each year when your pet comes in he or she will receive a comprehensive physical exam and age appropriate ancillary diagnostics (such as blood pressure screening, parasite tests and blood work) to screen for early signs of disease and to maintain immunity against communicable disease with vaccinations. Since pets can't tell us when they are in the early stages of disease, these exams are a very important way to help prevent serious illness in the future.

During these "well pet visits," the veterinarian…

  • Listens to the chest to detect early heart murmurs
  • Checks the ears for undetected inflammation due to infection or foreign bodies
  • Looks at the teeth and gums to determine dental health status
  • Palpates the abdomen for pain or enlargement of internal structures
  • The skin is examined for signs of dermatitis, seborrhea, parasites or growths
  • The eyes are checked for irritation or vision change
  • The legs and joints are also palpated for inflammation or arthritic changes.

We also recommend a yearly blood test for heartworm disease and a stool check to look for intestinal parasites that may be spread between pets and wildlife, many of which are also potentially contagious to humans (especially children).

As pets age, we recommend screening blood and urine tests to look for early stages of kidney and liver degenerative changes, thyroid function and glucose level. Many diseases may be readily controlled in the early stages by using disease specific diets. This avoids the long term hospitalization and expensive drug therapy necessary when pets present in late stage of disease. Often a pet's quality of life improves significantly as a result of nutritional counseling.

Behavioral problems may also be discussed during "well pet" visits if they involve routine situations and the owner has a common question. More serious behavioral issues would require a more lengthy consultation and possible referral to a specialist.

Well pet examination visits are discounted compared to regular office visits when no illness requiring therapy is present.

For participants in the Companion Animal Hospital Wellness Program, any vaccinations due at the time of the annual exam will be given at current participant rates. Patients with health-related concerns will be recommended more advanced diagnostics when needed. More frequent re-evaluations will most-likely become necessary for those pets with ongoing illnesses.
