Our goal here at Companion Animal Hospital has always been to assemble a veterinary health care team in Santa Cruz that is committed to providing exceptional client service and veterinary health care. Our veterinary team displays an unrivaled commitment to our clients through continuing education, technological advances in veterinary medicine and service, and most importantly, by administering compassionate care to all pets entrusted to us.
We're very proud of the fact that we are "Diamond Certified." Not all businesses qualify for this distinction. According to Diamond Certified –
"Companies must score Highest in Quality in customer satisfaction, a 90+ on a 100 scale, and pass all of our credential-based ratings. By requiring such a high score to qualify, we cut out mediocre and poorly performing companies."
We plan to continue on with our tradition of providing the best service possible and to retain our Diamond Certified status. Read more about the Diamond Certification process in this document.
Veterinarians, Dr. David Horne and his wife, Dr. Donna Baird, as well as Dr. Della Tone, are our resident veterinarians and are assisted by an experienced team of experts. I have been practicing as a companion animal veterinarian for 34 years. I was raised in Palo Alto, CA. I know it sounds a little corny, but as a boy, after reading “Old Yeller”, I wanted a dog more than anything else in the world. Finally, at 15, my parents decided that I was old enough to be the main caregiver for a Golden Retriever. I’ll always remember my experiences raising and training my first dog. Later, as a young man, I became an avid trainer of Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Initially this hobby was simply to develop a closer bond with my dog. Late my interest in training led to competing with my dog in retriever field trials all over the western United states. Rusty and I did quite well in these field trials, and I met people that would greatly affect the direction my life would take. Among these new friends were several students and a dean at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. When I found myself graduating high school, I couldn’t imagine any other career other than one in veterinary medicine. I was on a mission, and after three years of undergraduate work, I was accepted into the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. I graduated in 1977 with an emphasis on companion animal medicine and surgery.
During my 34 years of veterinary practice, I have developed special interests in dentistry, dermatology, cardiology and surgery. Actually, it’s difficult for me to say what I’m not interested in regards to caring for dogs and cats. I love helping people with their companion pets. I can’t imagine a career better suited for me.
Having grown up in a household with two physician parents, I was interested in medicine since I was very young. But preferring to work with sick animals rather than with sick people, I decided when I was 12 years old to become a veterinarian. After graduating from veterinary school at Cornell, I started my own animal hospital in New Hampshire. Nineteen years later, I sold it to the partner I had taken on and not long after that I moved to sunny California. Here in Santa Cruz I have joined my husband, Dr. Horne, at Companion Animal Hospital on a part-time basis. We share our Bonny Doon home with Mel, a chocolate Lab senior, Sheila, a rambunctious young Cattle Dog, and Magoo, an orange Tabby who doesn’t believe that he isn’t a dog. I love to explore animal life in the wild during my travels. Recently I joined a small group of UC Davis veterinarians in Africa, first trekking gorillas in Rwanda and then in South Africa placing GPS collars on elephants (to study their migration patterns) and microchipping and notching white rhinoceros family members (to discourage illegal poaching).
I am a resident of Santa Cruz and enjoy living “between the redwoods and the deep blue sea”. A Bronx, New York native, I received my B.S. in Biology from Fordham University in 1977 and my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1982. I have worked in New York, Connecticut, Texas and now California as a “dog and cat” doctor. I moved to Mountain View in 1989 (just in time for the earthquake), subsequently fell in love with Santa Cruz, and moved here after my son, Tim, was born in 1996. I enjoy medicine and surgery and believe in the importance of regular dentistry for pets. I have a side interest in nutrition and energy medicine and I am a certified Reiki Master. When not at work, I like doing “Mom things”, walks on the beach or in the local forests, camping , kayaking and being a groupie for Rapid Fire, the local teen rock band in which my son plays bass guitar. I am delighted to be a part of the Companion Animal Hospital Team.
I happily joined the team at Companion Animal Hospital in January 2011. I have 12 years of experience in the veterinary field; for the past 6 years I have worked primarily as a full time receptionist. Previously I have done everything from being Head Technician, Surgical Assistant to Receptionist. I studied Animal Health Technology at Gavilan College and was accepted as a Veterinary major to UC Davis. I have nearly 25 years experience as a successful outside sales representative primarily in the mortgage and credit industries. I have studied extensively in sales and motivational training. In my spare time I also do some landscape design work as Dream Gardens Landscape Design, having completed the Horticultural program at Cabrillo College. I also used to breed, train and show Champion Shetland Sheepdogs. I am currently owned by a large long-haired pastel tortie named “Cinderbellie”. Let’s see if I can make it through this “kitten season” without adopting a new baby. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and close friends. I travel as much as possible (especially love tropical locations). Photography, gourmet cooking and gardening are some of my favorite pastimes.
My name is Katie and I work mainly as a receptionist at Companion Animal Hospital. I have worked at various animal hospitals ever since I was sixteen years old, and I have been with Companion Animal Hospital since October of 2008. I have always had a passion for animals, despite the fact that I am allergic to dogs and cats. One of my goals in life is to start a pit bull rescue organization. I currently attend Cabrillo College to pursue their nursing program in order to become a Nurse Practitioner.
I completed the Veterinary Technician program at Western Career College 2 ½ years ago. I have 2 cats, Precious and Leuk, that use to be blood donors. Most of my experience is in emergency medicine; however, I have been enjoying my transition into general practice. I also have experience working closely with specialists in fields such as Oncology, Internal Medicine and Specialty Surgery.
My name is Kym and I’ve been working at Companion Animal Hospital since December, 2010. I have worked as a veterinary technician since 2002 in Santa Cruz County. I’ve always had a love for animals since before I could remember. I currently have 3 Dachshunds and a large aquarium at home, which always keeps me busy. I see myself as working with animals until I retire – someday …
My name is Aimee and I have lived in Santa Cruz my whole life. I’m married and have two children. I love my work with animals at Companion Animal Hospital. I have worked with animals my entire career and love doing it! In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with my family and my animals. We have three cats, a dog and a horse. We love doing things like going to the beach and camping.
