I have been practicing as a companion animal veterinarian for 34 years. I was raised in Palo Alto, California. I know it sounds a little corny, but as a boy, after reading “Old Yeller,” I wanted a dog more than anything else in the world. Finally, at 15, my parents decided that I was old enough to be the main caregiver for a Golden Retriever. I’ll always remember my experiences raising and training my first dog. Later, as a young man, I became an avid trainer of Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Initially, this hobby was simply to develop a closer bond with my dog. Lately, my interest in training led to competing with my dog in retriever field trials all over the western U.S.

Rusty and I did quite well in these field trials, and I met people that would greatly affect the direction my life would take. Among these new friends were several students and a dean at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. When I found myself graduating high school, I couldn’t imagine any other career other than one in veterinary medicine. I was on a mission, and after three years of undergraduate work, I was accepted into the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. I graduated in 1977 with an emphasis on companion animal medicine and surgery.

During my 34 years of veterinary practice, I have developed special interests in dentistry, dermatology, cardiology and surgery. Actually, it’s difficult for me to say what I’m not interested in regarding caring for dogs and cats. I love helping people with their companion pets. I can’t imagine a career better suited for me.
